“It’s superb, I have never seen such a beautiful installation,” raises the Photographer Xavier Lamboursstrolling in his own exposureat theJean-Legendre de Compiègne area. He presents there until May 17, around thirty large format images on the bike theme. L’Vélolavie exhibition is part of a herself with respectful salvation for bicycle lovers. Xavier Lambours brings his poetic gaze by staging the spectators of the roadside on the background of colorful jerseys forming a long cord crossing the landscapes of the North, bathed in a fabulous light which is sometimes reflected on the wetted rodies.
His meeting with Jacques Bonaffé man of theater, is at the origin of his rapprochement of the bicycle. “He covered all professional and amateur cycling races”
“At the very beginning of our common adventure, I followed the Critérium de Saint-Amand-les-Eaux,” he recalls. I had taken black and white photos and finished a color film. In development, I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that the North and the Flanders, it was the color above all. This first color work made me become a colorist, I who so far saw in black and white. For three years I “did” all the northern cycling races, amateures and professional. The Denain Grand Prix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Grand Prix de Dunkirk. And of course Paris-Roubaix and the Tour de France. I love to see cyclists and the bicycle registered in the landscape. By the photo of these cycling events I have in some ways rediscovered my country. ”
During the opening, there was Sébastien Minard, professional cyclist until 2016. Originally from Oise, he participated in six towers of France, six towers of Italy, and twelve Paris-Roubaix.
A career as a photographer started before 1980
The arrival in Compiègne, and in particular to the Jean-Legendre space, sounds as a return to the basics for Xavier Lambours. In 1986, he was one of the guest artists of the operation Ten photographers for a city which led to Compiègne big names in the photo like Edouard Boubat. The images produced by Xavier on this occasion are now integrated into the Espace-Jean-Legendre art library.
Xavier Lambours’ career started at the dawn of the 1980s. At that time, photography gained notoriety. Young photographers are making a name for themselves through the publication of their images in newspapers and magazines that make them the place. Xavier Lambours is one of them.
Under the leadership of artistic director Christian Caujolle, also at the head of the new agency Vu, the newspaper Liberation opens its pages in the photo. At the Cannes Film Festival, Xavier Lambours draws the portrait of François Truffaut, Robert de Niro, Orson Welles or Anne Shygulla. At the same time, Xavier Lambours continues his personal work in parallel. He exhibited, among other things, at the Arles Festival, in Visa for the image, at the Center Pompidou, at the National Center for Photography. And receives numerous international prizes. He will also be the only photographer with the Academy of Fine Arts Academy and will receive the very envied Niepce Prize.
