“There is currently no single alternative to fossil fuels, we must have a realistic global vision: the world population will reach 8.5 billion in 2030 and the global gross domestic product will double in the decade. This will push energy consumption, also considering the demand in growth for the development of artificial intelligence”. Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister, says this from Baku while speaking at the plenary session of the 29th UN Conference on Climate Change, COP29. “We need a balanced energy mix, to strengthen the transition process”, explains Meloni, “we must use all the technologies available, not only renewables but also gas, biofuels, hydrogen, CO2 capture and in the future nuclear fusion , which will be able to produce clean, safe and unlimited energy.”
“Like every Cop, it is up to us to determine whether it will be a success or a failure. We know that we may not personally benefit from the results of the efforts we are making. But that is not the important thing. I am a mother and as a mother nothing gives me more satisfaction of when I work for policies that will allow my daughter and her generation to live in a better place. So, as William James would say, ‘Act as if what you do makes a difference, because it does.'”
