“We had to move thousands of books, pack them in boxes and store them,” summarizes Anne Martin. Before making them available to the public. The whole team mobilized.” After a few weeks of worksthere Jacques-Mourichon library of Compiègne resumes normal operation. Created in the Puy-du-Roy district in the 1970s, it has undergone a “facelift”, from the first floor to the ground floor.
“The color of the medium brown ceilings, characteristic of the 70s, has given way to brighter white tiles,” explains Anne Martin, heritage manager and member of the Mourichon library team. The lighting is now LED.” So much so that the book shelves are more visible and the rooms no longer have dark areas.
In addition to the books that can be consulted and borrowed, there is a loan library. Activities for young people and adults are on the program in a dedicated room where a “fab lab” is also installed.
Book drop box
The library welcomes residents of the neighborhood but also many others who prefer to avoid parking problems in the city center. Another practical advantage: the existence of a book drop-off box for readers who cannot come before closing time.
Previously, the Saint-Corneille library in the city center was the only one in Compiègne. In the seventies, the Jacques-Mourichon library was created in the Puy-du-Roy district. There is also a library in the Bellicart district.
Jacques-Mourichon’s “seventies” architecture is characterized by the use of concrete with modern lines. A first renovation operation took place in 1979.
The Mourichon library opens Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
