The city of Soissons has just spent four months works to complete his construction site modernization of its public lighting. She specifies: “These are 4,000 light points, out of the 5,000 in the municipality, which have been replaced by lighting fixtures LEDmaking Soissons a city now 100% equipped with this innovative technology. By the end of the first quarter, all districts can be turned back on at night. »
“All neighborhoods will be turned back on by the end of the first quarter”
This replacement work will result in a 70% reduction in the total bill. In addition to preserving public finances, this project, coupled with that of extending the district heating network, therefore makes Soissons a pioneer city in terms of energy transition. In addition, the intensity of each light point can be adjusted according to schedules and needs. For example, street lights will reduce their brightness from 11 p.m. on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends. However, if necessary, the emergency services, firefighters, police, technical on-call services, will be able to immediately restore full lighting intensity in certain sectors in a few seconds to facilitate their interventions.
After the problems with electricity production which led to an unbearable spike in prices for many municipalities, the city of Soissons was obliged to turn off its public lighting during the night in order to minimize its energy bill. These new lights will therefore avoid this total extinction, which is hardly compatible with the safety of people and property during the night.
Light management based on traffic
The new LED lighting fixtures offer advanced features that will enable finer management of urban lighting. In fact, thanks to presence sensors and artificial intelligence (AI), the lighting of several streetlights will adjust according to the flow of vehicles. A period of six months will be necessary for the AI to learn and adapt.
In addition, sound level meters will collect data to anticipate urban developments, such as the installation of soundproofing coverings. In the event of rain or a sudden drop in light, the lighting can be automatically increased to guarantee the safety and comfort of residents. Each light point is now equipped with sensors that allow the state of the network to be monitored in real time. Technical services can thus quickly diagnose breakdowns and intervene effectively.
Ginette Platrier, town planning assistant, specifies several aspects, including financial, of this new feature: “Currently in the running-in phase, this new system will be fully operational by the end of the first quarter. Ultimately, it will restore night lighting in all districts of the city while meeting economic, ecological and security challenges. This ambitious project, with a total cost of 3.5 million euros, was financed thanks to an “Intracting” loan at an advantageous rate (2%) granted by the Banque des Territoires. The energy savings, estimated at 1.3 million kWh per year, will make it possible to repay the investment in just 7 years. With this new generation lighting, Soissons is positioning itself as an innovative and sustainable city, focused on the future and the well-being of its inhabitants. »
