The general Salvatore Luongo, former deputy general commander of the Army, he is the new general commander of the Carabinieri. The nomination came during today’s meeting of the Council of Ministers.
Luongo, Neapolitan, 62 years old, will take over Teo Luzi and it has embarked on a military career in 1977attending courses at the Nunziatella Military School in Naples, the Modena Military Academy and the Carabinieri Application School in Rome.
Graduated in Law, Political Sciences and Internal and External Security Sciencesholds a master’s degree in International Strategic-Military Studies, Strategic Sciences and holds a Higher Diploma in Humanities from the Gregorian University of Rome.
Luongo had various top roles in the capital and, from August 25, 2016 to December 16, 2024, is was head of the Legislative Office of the Minister of Defensewhile from 24 November 2021, representing the Ministry of Defence, he is member of the management committee of the national school of administration.

Luongo was awarded the honours of Grand Officer of Merit of the Italian Republic, Gold Cross for length of service, Bronze Military Medal of merit for long command, Insignia of honor of the Military House of the Presidency of the Republic, Badge for military personnel serving at the Office of Military Affairs of the Presidency of the RepublicCipher of Honour, Commander’s Cross with swords of Merit Melitense of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John, of Rhodes and of Malta and the Bronze medal of merit of the “Italian Red Cross”.
In 1997 Luongo was awarded the honorary citizenship of the Municipality of Taurianova (Reggio Calabria), in 2006 he received the Campidoglio prize and in 2015 he had the “Civis anni” citizenship of the city of Venafro (Isernia). In 2016 it was awarded to him by Jewish Community of Rome the “Stefano Gaj Tachè. The friend of children”.
