The Mexican delegation’s medal haul at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games continues to grow. Marco Verde’s triumph in the 71 kg boxing category on Saturday has now brought the total to four medals for Mexico at the universal event in the French capital.
Verde won his quarter-final fight by defeating Nishant Dev of India, securing at least a bronze medal and adding to Mexico’s medal count in Paris 2024. Earlier, Verde had defeated Mozambique’s Tiago Muxanga in the round of 16 to advance to this stage.
From Less to More
Marco Verde staged a comeback against India’s Nishant Dev, who managed to generate some concern in the third round. Verde’s performance in the first round did not initially go his way, although he caused the referee to issue a protection count against his opponent in the final seconds. Verde then gained momentum, taking control in the second round and solidifying his victory in the third. To reach the final, he will face British boxer Lewis Richardson on Tuesday.
Mexican Boxing Expands Its Olympic Medal Count
With Marco Verde’s performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Mexican boxing has now earned 14 medals out of the 77 won by the Mexican delegation throughout Olympic history. This marks the first Olympic medal in the welterweight division (71 kg) for Mexico. The other medals have come in the following categories: four in bantamweight, three in flyweight, two in featherweight, two in middleweight, one in lightweight, and one in fullweight.
Mexico last earned an Olympic boxing medal in Rio de Janeiro 2016, when Misael “Chino” Rodriguez took bronze in the 75 kg category. Mexico did not secure a boxing medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
