THE store Green range of Crépy-en-Valois did he put on sale these so controversial glue traps ? Although the store initially denied it, these rat traps are present in store. A little trick which provoked the anger of theassociation PAZ (Zoopolis Animal Project).
Glue traps, widely criticized, immobilize trapped animals, causing extreme suffering according to animal associations. Rodents sometimes die there for hours, even days, from hunger, thirst or exhaustion. These non-selective devices also capture other animals, including protected species like hedgehogs and robins.
For Amandine Sanvisens, co-founder of PAZ, “glue traps are extremely cruel and ineffective. Many countries, such as Ireland and New Zealand, have banned them. France must do the same.”
“Gamm vert does not sell this type of item”
However, the Gamm Vert Customer Relations Department had assured that it did not sell this type of product. “You would like to know if we sell “rat glue” or “glue trap”, Mr. Séyivé, customer service manager, wrote to the PAZ association in January 2024. I inform you that gammvert.fr do not sell this type of item.” Logically, the Gamm vert in Crépy-en-Valois should therefore not present this type of product on its shelves. What a surprise, therefore, for animal activists to discover these traps in stores. The company lied. Oise Hebdo also noted the presence of these traps in stores. The Crépy brand, for example, sells “Glue Traps” from the Lucifer brand, sold in pairs. A reference also available on the site gammvert.fr at the price of 7.49 euros.
The association points out that there are animal-friendly pest control methods, such as mechanical traps or catch-and-release solutions. The adoption of these alternatives would make it possible to preserve the local ecosystem while meeting the needs of residents, they insist.
Local and national mobilization
In addition to the online petition targeting Gamm vert, which has already collected more than 16,000 signatures, PAZ is leading a national campaign to raise consumer awareness and challenge the government. On March 28, 2024, the association presented arguments in favor of banning glue traps to the Ministry of Ecology. She hopes for rapid legislative commitment, as several European countries such as Switzerland and the United Kingdom have done.
Parliamentarians of different political persuasions also took a stand, calling on the government to put an end to the marketing of these cruel traps. This was the case of Les Républicains de l’Oise deputy Olivier Paccaud.
In Oise, several stores have already given up on these products, such as the Super U in Thourotte. Some Gamm vert in France have also removed these products from their shelves. Thanks to its actions, the association also succeeded in stopping the sale of sticky rat traps in all Bricorama stores in France. “Supplies to Bricorama stores of glue traps have been stopped,” assures the fourth French DIY brand in writing.
PAZ hopes that Gamm vert in Crépy-en-Valois will follow this example.
The association invites residents of Oise to sign the online petition and express their disagreement to their local store. To sign the petition: Stop the sale of glue traps at Gamm vert
