In the video above, Mayor Philippe Marini and Blood Donors President Jean-Marc Piet inaugurate the Tree of Life.
“We plant Compiègne wherever we can,” comments Mayor Philippe Marini. Equipped with a waterproof hat, the mayor approaches the corner of the Saint-Nicolas car parkin the rain, microphone in hand. “In Compiègne, we plant trees, he continues. Like this morning when we continued the “one child, one tree” operation.” This winter, the city will plant 300 trees of different species.
But the ash tree inaugurated on Saturday December 7 has something special. It’s a tree of life. It symbolizes the blood and organ donations.
Jean-Marc Piet chairs the Compiègne Blood Donors association, which sponsors this tree of life. “It pays tribute to the people who donate blood and who are still there, those who donate their organs and who are no longer there,” adds the president of one of the oldest associations in Compiègne. He succeeded Agnès Loeillet, present at this ceremony.
An idea from Saint-Paul-de-Vence
Jean-Marc Piet takes the opportunity to thank one of the municipal councilors of Compiègne. Kamel Touih is in fact at the origin of this initiative. An idea that he brought back from a stay in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, more precisely.
“For a long time, we have been looking at this Saint-Nicolas car park, which is the result of destruction during the Second World War,” concludes the mayor. There wasn’t much, apart from this parking lot which wasn’t very attractive.” Marc-Antoine Brekiesz, road commission deputy, explains that there will now be four trees.
