Tiana Echegaray, another Olympic debutant, faced Turkey’s world champion Hatice Akbas in the Women’s -54kg category. Despite a valiant effort, Echegaray was outclassed by the skilled Turkish boxer, losing 5-0. Echegaray remained positive, stating, “Hatice was very good. Anytime I fight someone incredibly skilled, it makes me realize I have so much more to learn.”
Australia’s hopes now rest on the remaining boxers in the competition, including Shannan Davey, Caitlin Parker, and Charlie Senior, who are set to fight on July 31.
