In 2025, the Noyonnais region will truly begin work on the Seine-Nord Europe Canal, which has been awaited for decades. After the end of 2024 dedicated to preparation, the priority works will really begin, transforming the territory, like the work already underway downstream between Compiègne and Noyon. Work taking place under the direction of the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe.
Preliminaries initiated from 2024
In 2024, preparatory activities began in Noyonnais. The archaeological diagnostics launched in May 2023 have made it possible to excavate nearly 200 hectares so far, revealing in particular the presence of a Gallo-Roman villa in Noyon. The projects also affected the Beaulieu-les-Fontaines/Frétoy-Campagne sectors from October 2024, and from November, Sermaize/Catigny and Pont-l’Évêque. These archaeological projects will continue, according to the latest estimates, until the summer.
The release of rights-of-way has also progressed around priority areas, that is to say on the site of the future lock at the southern entrance to Noyon and around the western bypass of Noyon (Porquéricourt). The deforestation campaigns started at the end of last year “are carried out under the supervision of ecologists in order to minimize the impacts on local fauna and flora”, specifies the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe. Compensatory measures, such as installing nesting boxes for birds and creating roosts for bats, accompanied this work. They take place outside the nesting period. These projects are planned until mid-March.
Furthermore, the rerouting of networks (electricity, telephone and drinking water) continues to prepare the ground for future infrastructure.
Demolition of buildings in the fall
At the same time, demolition operations for buildings located along the canal route will begin in the fall. This work concerns various structures, including pavilions, disused industrial buildings and old electrical installations, spread across several municipalities such as Noyon and Pont-l’Évêque. Among these projects is the demolition of the Briqueterie in Pont-l’Évêque, a complex comprising six buildings and outbuildings, scheduled for the fall. These interventions, also carried out outside sensitive periods for the environment, are accompanied by measures to avoid nuisance, in particular the recycling of deconstructed materials and the securing of the site perimeters.
The major stages to come in Noyonnais in 2025
The year 2025 marks the start of priority works in sector 2, including the construction of the “works docks”, structures necessary for the site.
Noyon, Catigny and Pont-l’Évêque: three work platforms
– THE Noyon quay Work should begin this January in the Beauséjour district. This project includes the construction of a berthing front, a storage platform, and a turning area.
– From summer 2025, the Catigny quay will be launched over a period of seven months, including earthworks and underwater sealing work for the Canal du Nord.
– THE quay of Pont-l’Évêque will be rehabilitated in the summer of 2025 over a period of one month.
Earthworks and Noyon lock:
Earthworks for the Noyon lock, planned as a central element of the route, should also begin this summer for an estimated duration of one year. The overall project, including the construction of the lock, is expected to last four years.
Closure of the RD 938:
This departmental road will be closed as soon as the earthworks on the lock begin for an estimated period of five years. A diversion will be set up via the RD 932, RD 1032 and RD 145, with information systems to support users.
Indoor roundabout RD934
The department should launch preparatory work for its roundabout project on the RD934 during the second part of the year. This roundabout will serve the future inland port of Noyon. The rerouting of the networks is planned for the second quarter of 2025 with a possible start of work from June at the end of 2025.
Temporary diversion of the western Noyon ring road:
At the end of 2025, work will begin to create a temporary diversion around Noyon to ensure traffic during the Canal works. This project includes a roundabout in Vauchelles and Porquéricourt. The work is planned until summer 2026.
Resumption of deforestation and environmental work: to respect the cycles of nature, deforestation work will resume from September 2025 to March 2026
An impact for residents
This work will have consequences on the daily lives of the inhabitants of Noyonnais: it is not for nothing that this project was given the nickname “construction site of the century”.
– Mobility : detours and road closures will require changes to usual routes.
– Temporary nuisances : construction site noise, increased heavy goods vehicle traffic and landscape changes will be perceptible.
– Dialogue with local residents : the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe plans measures to regularly inform residents, in particular via works information meetings, hotlines, and especially Newsletters and Flash Info Works sent by email to subscribers (registrations here: ).
In the longer term, expected benefits include improved river connections, reduced dependence on road transport and economic benefits for the region.
Between Compiègne and Noyon, four bridges will be built in 2024
In sector 1, the year 2024 saw something very concrete with major projects: four bridges were built between Montmacq and Pimprez (the work is nearing completion), and the bed of the Oise has been redeveloped over 3 km to make room for the route of the future Canal.
The RD 66 should be reopened at the beginning of 2025, it will then cross the Oise, the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal and the Oise lateral canal on the three new bridges between Cambronne-les-Ribécourt and Montmacq). The latest work consists of the installation of road surfaces, safety equipment, ground markings and the creation of sanitation basins.
Work on the Pimprez bridge which will also span the future Canal, and that on the new section of departmental road (RD40 bis) are also nearing completion.
